Cambutal

Our surf trips to Cambutal take you to some of the best and most consistent beach breaks, point breaks, and rock bottom reef breaks in Panama. Cambutal has some surf breaks that are as good or better than Catalina, and the nice thing is that you will never surf with a crowd here. You might find one or two locals trying to surf on wooden logs at the long beach breaks near the small town of Cambutal, but never at the point breaks. It’s just you and who ever comes along with you.

Cambutal is a 6 hour drive northwest of Panama city and our tour lodging is in a nearby town about a 1 hour drive inland from Cambutal.

Cambutal is small fishing town with a 10 mile long stretch of beach breaks, rock bottom point breaks, and rock bottom reef breaks. This spot is the biggest on South swells and it is rarely under 4' and as big as 15' faces or more with a good swell. The bigger it gets, the better for surfing the perfect point breaks in this surf infested haven.

The tides fluctuate up to 18' between high & low tide creating a variety of conditions and strong tidal push. Cambutal has a variety of breaks for surfing all tides. The best breaks are the point breaks and they can handle the biggest of swells. The beach breaks tend to break best during medium to high tide, however you can normally get some fun tubes at low tide along the sand bars. Low tide beach breaks get shallow and hollow with steep drops and very fast walls.

Other Breaks in the Area: There are several breaks in Cambutal accessible by 4x4. Some of these include:

Cambutal Beach Breaks - There are three stretches of sand bottom, fast and hollow left and right beach breaks. Located directly in front of the town or about 5 minutes from town. They get slightly larger than Venado, and much better form. The beach breaks can be surfed on all tides.

411 - A volcanic rock bottom right reef break, breaking over a volcanic rock reef and reeling off of a shallow rock bottom reef for about a 150 yard long ride with perfect fast tubes and lots of fun sections to hit the lip. Located North of the town of Cambutal, about a 10 minute drive on a dirt road along the beach. This place is usually about the same size as Venado, if not a foot or two bigger but with much more power and form. You can surf this spot on all tides.

Dinosaurios - A volcanic rock bottom right and left reef break next to 411, with lots of power and big hollow tubes. The left breaks with a solid wall and tube for about 50 yards and closes out on the inside when it connects to the next reef. The right breaks with a good tube, then mushes out until it reaches the inside where it jacks up again for some good lip smacks. It is located next to 411, about 10 minutes from the town of Cambutal. They call this wave Dinosaurios (Dinosaurs) because the wave is so thick. This wave can get hairy! It is normally a few feet bigger than 411.

Corto Circuito - A long rock bottom right point break. The peak breaking over a large table rock with a steep-fast drop and forming a solid, thick tube. After the peak, the wave is just a long ripable wall with various sections to hit the lip, get tubed, or do floaters or airs. I have seen guys get tubed twice, do 3 round house cutbacks, do 4 off the lips and get a floater at the end on one wave here. It is probably the best break in Cambutal. It is located about 20 minutes from the town of Cambutal. It is normally a few feet bigger than Venado or 411.

Night Life:

Night life in Cambutal is basically drinking a few brewski’s at the local pool hall or cantina, or hanging out with your buddies talking surf stories and playing dominoes or board games. There are a few cantinas, restaurants and parks where you can hang out at plus a supermarket and pharmacy. We are currently building a surf camp at Cambutal on the beach, but it will not be ready for several months.
